On World's Military Expenditure of 2021
The world is in conflict. In Europe, Russia invaded Ukraine and perturbed peace in the region once again. In the middle east, a civilian political uprising in Iran and U.S. troops leaving Afghanistan have created new dynamics which may lead to a desperate resolution to exercise control. And in China, President Xi successfully secured his third term as the party leader with closely related cabinet members, which may embolden him to take precarious action against Taiwan in a reunification effort. Here, I describe military expenditure and trade data curated by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute to describe geopolitical status of the three regions.
